South Indian Granite

Tan Brown Granite.

Tan Brown Granite from Andhra Pradesh is one of India's most widely recognised and exported granites — a warm, three-toned stone in tan, brown, and near-black with distinctive large mineral orbicules that create a bold, characterful surface.

About Brown

Tan Brown Granite is quarried from established quarries in Andhra Pradesh's Krishna and Guntur districts, within the Eastern Ghats geological belt. The stone has been in continuous export production since the 1970s and is one of the largest-volume South Indian granite exports by quantity. Its consistent supply, distinctive appearance, and proven performance in kitchen countertop applications have made it a global specification standard. FOB Mundra / Nhava Sheva. Origin and specifications verified by Gemarix.

Geological Profile

Density ~2.72 g/cm³
Water Absorption <0.15%
Compressive Strength ~195 MPa
Mohs Hardness 6 – 7

Tan Brown is a coarse-grained granite or rapakivi-textured granitoid in which large round to oval orthoclase feldspar megacrysts — the dominant tan-brown orbicules — are set within a dark hornblende-biotite-plagioclase matrix. The tan-brown colour of the feldspar megacrysts results from iron-bearing orthoclase. The dark matrix is composed primarily of hornblende and biotite with accessory magnetite and plagioclase. The three-tone character — tan orbicules, dark matrix, and lighter plagioclase — is the result of rapakivi-type magmatic crystallisation. The stone has low porosity and good mechanical properties.

Color & Character

Tan Brown Granite is immediately recognisable by its characteristic three-tone composition: large round to oval tan-brown feldspar megacrysts against a deep brown-black hornblende-biotite matrix, with scattered lighter grey-white plagioclase providing additional contrast. The orbicular megacrysts vary from 1 to 5 cm in diameter and are distributed across the slab without fixed directionality. On polished surfaces, the tan megacrysts develop a warm, honey-brown luminosity and the dark matrix achieves a near-black depth. The pattern is bold, warm, and immediately distinctive.

Best Applications

Kitchen Countertops

Tan Brown is one of the world's most widely specified kitchen worktop granites — its warm three-tone pattern combining high visual impact with the practical advantages of low porosity and extreme hardness.

Exterior Facades

The stone's high density, low porosity, and proven long-term performance make it a standard specification for exterior building cladding, entrance steps, and architectural facades.

Flooring

Large-format honed or polished Tan Brown tiles create warm, boldly patterned floor surfaces in high-traffic commercial and luxury residential applications.

Wall Cladding

Polished Tan Brown panels create warm, high-impact feature walls in hotel lobbies, restaurant interiors, and residential spaces.

Bar & Reception Counters

The stone's warmth and bold pattern are well suited to bar tops, reception desks, and hospitality counters in warm-scheme interiors.

Care & Maintenance

Tan Brown Granite has low natural porosity and is relatively stain resistant. Apply an impregnating sealer at installation for kitchen and bathroom use and re-seal every 18 to 24 months. The dark matrix conceals minor staining better than light-coloured stones. Clean with pH-neutral stone cleaner; avoid acidic or bleach-based products. The polished finish is robust and retains its warm depth of colour under normal conditions.
